One of my good friends from high school is a professional set lighter in LA. During the strike he thought it would be worth looking into cg lighting so he dl the maya trial and called me up asking for help. I wrote a few tutorials for him nothing too fancy really basic stuff and I started in on some GI tutorials but the strike ended and I assume he is no longer interested in cg stuff (I think he thought it would be really easy coming from his background and it wasn't what he thought). Anyway I had been thinking about this for a while its pretty basic just a sample of what looks off. There are more in the series with more details of each. I don't know if its of help to anyone.

nice spaceship - you missed the clamp output on that however.

Hmm, as far as I know, those black outlined splotches are caused by the aa filtering of high contrast transitions, so turning off, or using different AA filters might be a better way to go. In my opinion, clamping an output is never ever a good idea, unless you will never do any PP at all. :P
Best regards,
