  • making this material

    http://www.sensitile.com/pdfs/Sensitile-Jali.pdf

any of you rendering geniuses know how to make this kind of a material in max

i know im on the right track here, i started with the tower exterior tutorial which does work, but it does not allow for the random tiling, only a "stack" effect, hence the "reglit" portion of the tutorial where the glass channels are hard modeled

i want to do this on a strictly material level using tile maps and opacities and caustics

its such a challenging one, i was doing tile maps and trying to put gradiet ramps into the tile map slot but it only applies to the whole object not to the individual faces

    cambia and quadrato?
the other two panells are to easy to even talk about!

*g* no worry ..it's just the exact question what is missing.

I see two different kinds of materials there:
cambia(top left) and quadrato(bottom right) are the more difficult panels , but if you think in imitation and not simulating the effect you can try to use a combination of an object with a material for the transparent part and an object with the part which is reflecting inside the first object.
A one materialsolution would be a "shader", which is basicaly nothing a 3d artis can write.

The other two materials are really easy to generate with different tilemaps in the refraction and glossyrefreaction layer.

I know that this is far from the desire material u wish to make, but it takes me just 2 min to experiment with and decide to post it..

How will the material be used in your scene. Are we talking a detail shot of the material or a whole wall. That will make a difference in how you approach designing the material. For a non-detail chunk of wall I've used a random grayscale mosaic plugged into the IOR slot. It's not an exact simulation of the material, but it was close enough to satisfy the designers on the project. The attached image was not the exact material I used. Just something I made in a couple of minutes.

thanks, all great ideas, this is what i have done so far, i plan to get closer though and the lcient spoke about providing a caustic effect of the light from behind

but i was also interested in a technique for achieving the effect very close up

thanks all for entertaining the question
