  • reflections on water

    Hi,

I am trying to get to make similar reflections as shown in the second uploaded image, but have difficulties creating those elongated reflections on water.

Any ideas how to do them?

The water material has a falloff in the diffuse and reflect slot.

    Thanks for any help,
    Mark

This can be achieved by using\adding more smaller waves to your bump or mesh.

Thanks, I tried this but it does not help. Any other ideas?

Make sure you have some reflect glossiness on the water. It only takes a very small amount to do it. Like a .995. That took care of it on a scene I did a while back, but your mileage may vary.

What you are seeing in your example is the physical effect of what we sometimes call anisotropic reflections. Every little curve between the camera and the light is picking up a reflection of the light, and making it look elongated. You just need to adjust your mesh and bump map and it will work. I do this quite often, and works fine here.

the direction of the waves plays a large factor

Id question a few things such as:

is using falloff a better solution than fresnel reflections?. Maybe you need to play with the settings so that the water is reflecting at the specific angle required to show the building reflections at the top of each wave

Maybe you need more waves as at certain angle at the top of each wave, the building will be reflected. if you dont have enough, the bits of reflection wont link up together. Thats what i understand from trixians description?

Maybe you need the bright lights of the evening shot to see it clearly so it isnt going to work very well during the day anyway.

sorry i cant really help more. I really would'nt disregard what trixian said

Just stretch the map in that direction until you're happy

Also in the night shot especially, this effect is exagerated because the water/reflections are moving and the camera will have a longer shutter speed. Maybe a long exposure time on the vray camera with animated noise in the water material and motion blur would give similar results? Don't know...
