This used to be on the old forum, I'll post it again:
Follow these steps to configure distributed rendering with VRay:
1. Install VRay on all the render slaves you want to use (as pointed out in the install.txt file). This also includes the client machine, if you want to use that for DR rendering as well.
2. On each render slave, run DRWizard40.exe (for 3dsmax 4.x) or DRWizard50.exe (for 3dsmax 5.x). The wizard will ask a few questions. You must determine if you want VRaySpawner to run as a service, or as a normal program. Here is a brief explanation of the two modes:
In service mode, you can control the spawner through Control panel -> Administrative tools -> Services. You can also configure the spawner to run automatically when Windows boots.
In normal mode you have to start the spawner manually - either by executing the VRaySpawner40.exe/VRaySpawner50.exe file or by creating a shortcut on the desktop which you can double-click. In this mode the spawner will put an icon in the taskbar tray. Use this icon or the Task Manager to stop the spawner and close the render slave.
You must select the mode which you prefer.
The wizard will also ask about a temporary directory (this will be used to transfer the .max scene), the 3dsmax/AutodeskVIZ folder, and the folder where VRaySpawner is located (normally this is the root Max/VIZ folder). The wizard will then create an .ini file to be used by the spawner.
