I finally got around to changing back to the old 2009 material browser this morning and had forgotten just how slow the mat browser in 2011 can be.
To revert back to the earlier version open this file:
C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR.USER.NAME\Local Settings\Application Data\Autodesk\3dsmax\2011 - 64bit\enu\plugcfg\SME.ini
and switch on the old Material Browser by changing the value of the last line to "1":
ie.
UseOldMtlBrowser=1
If for some reason this doesn't work then you have your 3dsmax profile configured differently. You should make the change to the the SME.ini file here instead:
C:\Applications\3ds Max 2011\plugcfg\SME.ini
Click get material and enjoy the amazing speed of da old skool 2009 mat browser
