  • Balloons - free Vray Material

When I posted a series of images featuring some Hans Wegner furniture recently, some people asked about the props and, in particular, the material used for the balloon on the floor.

Rather than do a tut on this, I thought I’d provide the 3ds Max file for anyone interested to have a look. The file, including the geometry, the shaders and the required maps can be downloaded from my TS store here. Feel free to grab it and have fun with it.

You can visit my blog for more details on the material, including a screenshot of the setup.

That's really nice, and I agree about them making the world a happier place. If anyone could save a balloon with texture as a vrimg file (or a 3ds file), I'd appreciate it. We are stuck in dark ages of Max2009!

Hey Tricky. A lot of people are still on 2009. That's a big problem. That's why I put a screenshot of the material tree on my blog. I didn't include an obj version in the archive as the main focus of interest was the material, not so much the geometry. But you can always install a trial version of Max 2011 if you want to have a closer look at it. It's fully functional for 30 days.
By the way, the link you posted in the other thread is great. I'll definitely use it.

No problem BBB3. I'm beginning to feel we are being left behind with all the Vray 2.0/RT/Max 2012 talk.......

I wonder is the .mat file format heavily tied into the version of max?

Hmm - I wonder would it be worth doing a material exporter / importer then - make it compatible with vray for maya and xsi too? It seems to be a fairly common thing at the minute with Bazuka on the Maya forum being incredibly nice and converting the materials from vray materials.de.

Easy enough done so since the vray material doesn't change all that often. Not that you've too many problems making good looking materials
