Little update Starterkit3: colormapping multiplier so, that the physical sky looks right exposured.

New: Starterkit 4 at the first post - the setup for quality and speed. Let me know, if problems are found with this setup.

Hello Thanks for all your work and dedication to 3D modeling! I just joined joined this forum and was wondering if all the starter kits are different, or are they and update from the previous. Thanks for all your work!

        Hi,

the idea behind the starterkit is allways the same, new user should get fast start with one method based on light cache and irradiance map.

Starterkit 1 .. first version (HDRI env)
starterkit 2 ... update of the first version
starterkit 3 ... version based on physical sky
starterkit 4 ... new HDRI basd version with an experimental universal setup

I think, if the new SR will be released, than I will update 2, 3 and 4.
Better I should collect all setups and descriptions at the first post or?

          Hi Micha,

First of all, thanks for all your work! Without you, I wouldn't be able to make the renderings I do now. You really are my number one on this forum!

And about the starting post; I would say it'll be better if you put all your updates and starterkits in the first post of this topic. This way, you get a direct overview of every item, which is very handy.

This scene base on Vlados unversal setting method with LC + QMC in a HDRI environment (two selfmade HDRIs from me). Facts:
                  • - I use two HDRIs: one preblured for lighting and a sharp one for background. This help to get less noise in less time.
                    - I work in exponetial mode, this help to get an image like the human eye approx. works. The exponential mode is a little bit to soft, so most I correct it. A correction curve for the frame buffer is attched in the kit.
                    - The gold material is a double reflection layer metal for a subtle used metal effect. The blur layer need more time to calculate.
                    - For fast render tests use a QMC noise level of 0.05 and for less noise use 0.005. The rendertime from noise level 0.01 to 0.05 increase 100%.

                  Regards Micha

                  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                  ... some months later:

***Starterkit 4*** (setup 2 and 3 below at the posts)

This should be the quality setup for every day, if speed isn't the first goal, but the rendering shouldn't be slow. Some hints explain, how to speed up the rendering. The first goal of the setup is quality, so that beginners must not post blotchy images anymore.

My last experiments for quality show me, that the image sampler "adaptive QMC" is important for the overall quality, for blury effects and small details. So, my tests show me, that I can use high material subdivs, but without a high AQMC, the image quality dosn't increase. So, the new setup base on image sampler "adaptive QMC" 1/32. For more speed try lower values like 1/16, 1/8 or 1/4.
The noise threshhold of the QMC sampler deteminate the quality level - 0.01 is good, 0.005 very good and 0.02 is good for fast previews. It's seems to be, that material subdivs can be ignored, but if a blury material looks noise, it can be used to increase the local quality.

Global Illumination: I try to keep it simple and fast. Some little rules:
                  - less shadow details and more speed -> max IM rate at -1 (default 0 high quality)
                  - blotchy image -> set more IM subdivs (good for interiors)
                  - more speed -> try less IM subdivs until light blochtes are visible

Light cache for secondary GI is good for anything. I don't know any reason to dosn't use it allways. Subdivs are default at 1200, less can speed up the LC pass, more can increase the quality. But 1200 should be good for most cases, the LC pass is fast. Sample size 0.01 is a good medium value, for more little GI shadow details a smaller value can be used. LC option "use for glossy rays" is a speed up for reflections. If reflections show blotches, use more LC subdivs or set the filter values higher (for example 20 ... 50).

HDRI environment: Important -> use a small blury version of the HDRI allways, this helps the GI sampling.

                  Hello Micha,
Let's lay some ground work, or context if you will.
When you reference options such as exponential mode, "the beginner" needs some sort of "map" or context in which to place the location of that setting. In this case the option is available in the Color mapping > type: exponential. scroll down box in the Render options tool bar. In addition, It would be nice to know if you started with a default ".visopt" file as a "baseline" setting for your foundation when you start looking at options for your "starterkit".
HDRI: for example, you make reference to HDRI but in the default V-ray package there are no HDRI files.
LC + QMC: this feature is mentioned in your starterkit discussion but I have reference for it other than that. I do see some mentions of gi_qmc_lc_very_high.visopt in the V-ray > Options > file > load section of the options selection area i.e. tool bar.
Well, I just thought I would add a few thoughts about structuring a map for the beginner when it comes to moving around in v-ray and try out some of the options in your starterkit. I'm sure everyone would get to the places you mention in time but it takes alot longer when one is "very" new to v-ray. It might clear up some of the confussion with the beginner to v-ray.
                  Thanks, ratrace2

Hey Micha Thanks for your help. Can you check the Starterkit3 I dont know why but my Render image It´s all black. The geometry looks really dark. Almost like the backround.
                      Thank you a lot.
