  • A new method to texture large grounds - environment textured materials

    Hi,

    my problem was, that grass texture of large areas are not looking good. Problem: I can get a high detailed forground per high res map, but the background show the repeating pattern or looks to homogeneous. Yesterday I found a solution: I take two images from a wide grass area and create a top-down 180° image from it. Horizontal viewangle is standard digital camera wide angle. After some retouch work it's seamless endless.



    I create a diffuse ground material with texture type "environment" and horizontal repeat 9. And here the result: detailed foreground, variation at the background and the grass look match at every viewangle. Important: it works for human eye view renderings only, not for bird views.

    If somebody like, try to create own textures of other ground types and post it here please.

    An other way to get environment textures could be to use high res panorama shots from flickr.com and create seamless endless texures for views in all directions.

    Yowza! That's one of the best looking grass I've seen yet! I was just thinking about this problem yesterday, the detailed foreground vs non-repetitive background, excellent solution.

    Could you send your material to the materials repository? Or is the bitmap too large?

      Bitmap is very large, but the material is sooo simple: only diffuse material layer with texture -> set texture type environment -> horizontal repeat 9 -> ready to use.

                          Truly great, I just got this working and I have to say its a wonderful solution. Much easier than all the clipped, displaced, etc solutions.

                          Maybe this weekend I'll get an asphalt version of this going.
