Re: A new method to texture large grounds - environment textured materials

What a brilliant solution. Micha, you are a genius. I had been struggling to get decent grass, which has been turning out looking very artificial. I was able to download your file and here is the result, merged in with an existing building - in sketchup (now all I need to do is sort out the roof tiles!

    Thanks

Re: A new method to texture large grounds - environment textured materials

Good to see SketchUp users taking a peak over here in the rhino forums...Theres a great bit of knowledge out there, not only between vfr and vfSu, but also with V-ray for max. I would encourage users to look at some of the vfMax tutorials that are out there (like exhibited here) and begin to work them into whatever your work flow is...Rhino or SketchUp. Its all v-ray, and everyone can benefit.

Got 3D has several free textures that look like they would work well for this. Haven't played with any yet.

Here's a higher res image using Micha's grass.

Re: A new method to texture large grounds - environment textured materials

Today I have seen a high res environment at flickr.com. After some retouching, the environment allow to use 98% of grass area of the 360° panorama, so that no tiling is necessary. Advantage of this texture: it can be full turned around until the grass shadow match the virtual sun light .. and little flowers everywhere.

Re: A new method to texture large grounds - environment textured materials

Take the spherical map from flickr.com and use it as diffuse texture. Set texture type "environment". Play a little with the vertical repeat (0.9 .. 1), so that the missing grass at the horicon line is not visible or retouch the missing grass in photoshop befor.

PS: I don't want to post my retouched map, because the copyright.

Micha: i'm so fond of your grass!! It's really unbelievable!
I use V-ray 4 sketchup and it magnificently works!!!

I tried textures, displacements, bumps.. but nothing seemed to work this well!!!
Thank you so much man! Hope i can give you back the favor, one day or another..

Two things - set texture UVW type "environment" and set repeat like I wrote at the beginning. It looks like your repeat count is to high.
