Maybe this is obvious, but if you also apply the same image with the same mapping to the background, you can get the part of the image that's above the horizon to render into the background. You have to manage the background multiplier to make sure it's the same brightness as the illuminated ground plane, but it can produce a pretty seamless image.

        Hi Micha

Your grass tutorial looks amazing and its something i truly struggle with all the time. However, im not too sure if i understand your tutorial. Are you suggesting we take 1 photo at eye level of grass and then from the other angle (180 degrees – which is opposite from where the first pic is taken). Is this what you mean?

It means, a photo like shown at the first post can be used as ground texture, if the mapping type is set to "environment" and a horizontal repeat is used. The advantage is, that from near to far distance no texture tiling effect is generated and the foreground show a high detailed texture.

            Hello,

Thanks a lot for you tutorial.
I got some problmes when I try to render with your texture..
On the image below.. it seems good on the left part but weird on the right part.... do you know why ?

EDIT : I've found the answer... : I was in angular mapping mode... It works fine now in Spherical mode

              Hi

Does anybody have such a seamless texture like Michas for other materials like concrete? rocks? pebbles?? anything of that sort?

Would be appreciated if you could share.... id love to create my own but I dont know how to do it... maybe someone can explain? I had trouble understanding how to do it... I know how to apply it in Vray and it looks amazing, just dont know how to make it....

              thanks

Re: A new method to texture large grounds - environment textured materials

                Hello,

I wanted to find out myself, but after reading the complete topic - and still not getting it - I have to ask for help

                I'm using SketchUP 8 + V-ray 1.48.91.

I guess for me the main problem is that I'm not sure where I apply the bitmap as a diffuse layer. Do I go to render option and place it in GI or Background? Or do I just create a surface, apply some colour onto it and than add the bitmap? Or do I create a plane?

Or is it true that this method doesn't work in this version of V-ray?

Thank you in advance! And thanks a lot to all the people putting time and energy into replying beginners like myself.....

This method is currently not working in VfSU 1.48.xx due to a bug.
Also 1.48.91 is a beta version (outdated as well) - please keep updated with the betas and post in the beta forum regarding issues with VfSU betas.
Please mention what V-Ray and SketchUp version you are using when posting questions.

Advantage of this texture: it can be full turned around until the grass shadow match the virtual sun light .. and little flowers everywhere.

Wich retouching are u refering about??? ???

Make it horizontal seamless was needed.

                        hi,

Does the trick from Micha: endless-grass.png as envir texture still work in 1.5? It could be my fault, but I cannot make it work. I create a ground surface, attach a standard material, put the png in the M at diffuse, set UVWGenEnvironment, mapping spherical, horizontal repeat to 9. The result is awful. What mistake am I making?? Thanks!
