Can't be done simply in vray. But you can transfer the bits that you don't want to see onto a layer that you turn off (if you don't want to destroy your model). Vray doesn't render the turned off layers.

d's right. There's only one way I know how to pull this off, but you have to modify/isolate/delete SU geometry. you'll need this ruby script: http://www.crai.archi.fr/RubyLibrary...tionCutFace.rb I usually make a copy of my model just tbe sure I don't screw the original up.

I could show you how, if you'd like...

I would be interested in this as I normally plan the construction of a model early with wall and areas on layers I will turn off! makes for a flexible model...but my lord some planning is needed to make sure its right...

        Kind Regards

          Re: Render a Section Cut

tsubiaddict- you're much better off planning this out in advance; while it's just adds to the complexity of the modeling process, the end result is much cleaner and easier to control. What I was proposing to show juan.carlos.rioja was a process of retrofitting an existing construct with a sectional view. To accomplish this quickly you'd have to explode any group or component that intersects the section plane. Otherwise, you would reconstruct those groups/components in 2 separate pieces so one side could be isolated for the section render...obviously this would be a more time-consuming proposition.

Anyway, here is a very sloppy, simplified method of accomplishing this task. Bear in mind, this is not the ONLY way to do this...but, you may be able to adapt this method to work for you.

          1. make a copy of my model file just to make sure you don't screw up the original.

          2. create a section plane in SU and move it where you want the cut.

3a. select the section plane, right click, and select "Add Section-Cut Face" (the link to the ruby script is earlier in this thread).

3b. select whatever options you want in the dialog box.

4a. double-click the new group that the script made to go into group editing mode, Ctrl-A, and unhide all.

4b. explode the section face group.

5a. select the section plane alone, and rotate it 180 degrees. you should now see the geometry you wan to omit.

5b. this is the tricky part...carefully delete or isolate all the geometry on the "omit" side of the section plane. I would use parallel projection for this part to make the selections a little easier. when you're finished all you should see is the exploded section plane we created earlier with the script.

          6. after deleting/isolating the omitted geometry, you can delete the section plane, and also paint that section face however you want.

That's it...I know it's dirty and watered-down, but it works. Hope that helps...good luck!

thanks for that break down, this could be very useful. question: how do you import the ruby script into sketchup so that this function can be used? i have the extensions turned on and can see the ruby console.

              Re: Render a Section Cut

Navigate to the plugins directory for SU... I think it's "C:/Program Files/Google/Google SketchUp 6/Plugins/" and move the ruby file in there. Make sure any instance of SU is closed, then start it again and the new ruby should automatically load.

Now, you'll have that new command called "Add Section-cut Face", but since it's context sensitive, you'll only see it when you've selected a SU section plane and right-click to bring up the context menu.

By the way, you rarely ever need to have the ruby console open; that's really more for debugging broken scripts.

Hi everyone, I'm a beginner with vray
I've just found this old topic and It's quite close to what I 'd like to do : Is there a way to have such a cross section in an orthographic view (without the distorsion that I'll get with a perspective effect)? Any helps would be really appreciate?

In Sketchup go to Camera menu, and select 'Parallel Projection'. That should do it.

                            Re: Render a Section Cut

Hi my friends.. i've some problem to render the section.. so..

I've a big model, that is inserted in a place with other buildings.. there are many grops in the model.

When do the sectioncutface.. and explode it, i need to intersect those face with the model? But.. there are the groups, and the intersect, doesn't affect the inside of them. When go inside, can't erase (after remove the section plane) the other side that i don't wanna see.

I need to explode all the groups in my model?? this is a trouble.. first, because there are many and many groups, and second.. because the groups are necessary to do a cleaned work, with material...

                            So.. what can i do??

thanks in advance (and sorry for my english..)

                              Re: Render a Section Cut

Thanks 40th for your answer. But unfortunately I tried this already...even if I choose this camera I'll had a blank image . The only thing that I manage to set is a different kind of color mapping which give me a "halucinogenish" render (my grey turn to purple for exemple). I mean if I use a setting good enough for any other camera I would not have the same result (light global illumination) with an orthographic one an dthe same setting. I really don't have a clue on what to do...? any suggestion knowing that I tried to change the setting of the global illumination or/and other stuff without any better result?
Orei, having read this post I think there is two ways to "erase" the bit that you don't want to appear on your crossection "the layer trick"

and the "save a copy" and "delete", probably if you have a lot of groups you'll had to explode them and follow the technic above. Other wise what I used to do so far was to create a box bigger than my model and to align it to the section plane , then to create the intersection with all of my groups and delete, in an orthographic view, the bit that I don't want....Probably not the quickest way but it works.
