  • Getting rid of unused materials

If you are not careful, the materials list seems to keep growing with each new file (ie if you save it as a template)
To get rid of unwanted materials from your 'template' file you need to purge both the SU materials AND the vray materials . . .

First purge the sketchup materials, then open the vray materials and right clicked on 'scene materials' and you get a 'purge unused materials' option - purge these. Now, very important, open up the vray 'options' window and then close it. Save the sketchup file as your default, and close it. When you re-open sketchup all the additional materials have gone!

True, I haven't knew about purging V-Ray mat also, but SU totally! I consideer this to be a big problem... My friend sent me a 128 MB SU file, luck it wasn't purged, when I did it became 47 MB, less than half.
I mean, it should be automatic.

It's not automatic because some times you remove element temporary. If they where purged automatically it's be very annoying.
I've hooked up purge to a hotkey which I regularly use while modelling.
Please mention what V-Ray and SketchUp version you are using when posting questions.

It should be "automatic" for your friend to click "purge" before he sends 128Mb skp file. That's sloppy.
