  • How to light interior with a torch

    Hello everyone,

I am new to the forum. I have installed the trial version of Vray for Sketchup and played around with it before I buy it.

Does anyone have tips or a tutorial on how to light an interior that is actually not a typical interior lighting.

The light comes from a torch/fire and the interior is something you would see in a dungeon with walls made of stones and few openings where natural sunlight can come in.

Thanks for the help. Have a great day!

    Hey everyone,

All right, after a few days of testing, I finally figure out something that works quite well I think.

I used omni lights with a orange/yellowish color for the fire effect and the Physical Camera with a blue sky GI (skylight) set at 1. I had to set the intensity really high (8000) with Inverse Decay for the fire omni lights. I also used some rectangular lights for each of the openings with the options turned on (Invisible, Ignore Light Normals, Skylight Portal, Affect Diffuse, Affect Specular, Affect Reflections). The intensity for the rectangular lights was set very high too (between 2000 and 8000).

My textures had Displacement and Bump maps.

Note: the images I have attached are low resolution because they were done for work, and due to company policy I cannot show you the original full size renders. Also, postworks were done in Photoshop.

    Thanks for viewing. Happy rendering!

hey... from what I can see they look amazing. It's not the daily renders I see on this forum wich is good, something new ;D. I'm also wondering what kind of work you do.... looking at the scene. Is this your first time rendering or did you render before (and what renderapp did you use)?

        Hi Remon,

        Glad you like them.

It is my first time using Vray for Sketchup. I was looking for a render that is quick to learn, easy to use, and can create really nice photo realistic renders. But the main thing I was interested in is being able to light my interior scenes, and Vray seems to allow me to do that with ease.

I have been using Sketchup since it came out back in 1999 when I was working as an architect. After many years of architecture, I finally decided to quit my job and follow my dream which is to work for the video game/movie industries, that's what I have been doing now as a Concept Artist.

I used Maya and Max before. I also use Vue to render my environments. However, since I build all of my architectural models with Sketchup, I wanted a renderer that is integrated into Sketchup without doing any export/import. Podium was cool, but the quality was not up to the level I am expecting. I tried Artlantis, which is really awesome too, but I have to export my Sketchup model into their engine, and my camera settings somehow could not be kept same as in Sketchup. Moreover, I have to reapply the textures, which is not really convenient.

Although I have been using Vray (the free trial version)for the last few days, I think this is the one. I will probably buy it soon.

        Have a nice day!
