  • RAM patch for SU to use more than 2GB?

    Hi,

today I have seen at Damiens LargeSceneRendering.pdf, that SU is limited to 2GB. Maybe this is a solution:

I'm curious - will it work for SU? For Rhino v3 it was working.

Micha I will happily test that today and let you know. I have a huge scene and it wont render out in Vray4SU because of the 2Gb limit so I'll test it with this.

I dont believe it but it has worked!!! I had to render it at a slightly smaller resolution than I wanted but the fact it worked is fantastic! I tried for 2 days before to get it to work with no joy.
Thank you Micha for the link.

Please look at the taskmanager (Ctrl+Alt+Del) how much RAM is used by the SU exe - are it more than 2GB? Maybe the slightly smaller resolution helps only. If we are sure, than I will remove the "?" from the topic name.

If? It did... ;D I'll check out the RAM usage after my dinner Micha.

Well I tested the scene again - according to task manager, memory usage shoots straight up to 2.01GB, but instead of crashing like it normally does it carrys on rendering and the memory usage slowly climbs over 2.01GB none stop till the render is over. I havent got time at the moment to let it carry on to see what it reaches, all I know is that it now works! And the renders look better than what I produced the other day for my client...*sigh*!
Someone else needs to test this too and report back.

Well I tested that scene again today as the client requested a couple more views. Vray churned out the new renders no problem, I am chuffed to bits with it now.

If you find time, than you could copy some complex parts of your scene and start a rendering (must not be finished). Than it would be interesting to know how much RAM can be used. The old Rhino v3 without patch crashed at 1.6GB. I'm not sure what was the crash limit of SU without patch. At Damiens PDF I have seen 2GB, so I'm curious to hear about much more than 2GB.

Maybe interesting for SU user too:

... and best copy&paste the SU exe before, so that if the patch cause problems the old exe can be used again.

So this can be used to patch Sketchup, but does Vray use all the RAM available? I've got 6GB of RAM on 64 bit Vista, and I would like to use the maximum potential of the RAM when modelling and rendering.

If Vray doesn't use the RAM available, can the patch be used for Vray too?

Would love it the patch would allow unlimited RAM to be used ;D

Are SU and Vray independent tasks? At Rhino is one rhino.exe task used for Rhino and Vray. Did you read the link to the Rhino hints?

I set up the model duplicated it a few times in the scene and rendered it out at 3000px, the render crashed when SU reached 2.5GB memory usage in task manager.
