doan,
Onyx has a stand alone program called Onyx Tree Professional which allows you to model trees from scratch.
However, they also have a plugin for max which aloows you to load in Tree files and alter parameters.
The set up is similar to SpeedTree Max and SpeedTreeCAD.

One of the recent 3D World magazines included a full version of Xfrog on their CD, if you are using Max 6, download the newest import plugin from the xfrog site rather than using the one that comes on the 3D World CD.
Once you have found that, at the following website, you can download some free basic trees in *.xfr format to help you get the grasp of the tool: Xfrog Public Plants
There is also a tutorial in the magazine that goes through the process of making one of the sample trees that are on the CD.Ben Steinert

"Guest" was wanting to know how to model a tree, and I think XFrog is an excellent tool for completing such a task.
In every project I have done, I have to sacrifice for the client's preferences. Sometimes that sacrifice is time, and others, it is detail. If your project allows more time, and has few trees (for me, 1 to 5), XFrog is an excellent, cheap solution for very high detail scenes.
By the way, if you are downloading the .max versions from the public website, you may try using the importer plugin and directly importing the .xfr trees. If I remember correctly, I did have some trouble with VRay and the .max versions of those trees, but I have not done any tests to see if there is really any difference.Ben Steinert

treemaker is much better than those opacity mappad trees (speedtree and all of them which are makes the leafs by putting mask and texture on a plane). And renders faster also. You can make in 5 min custom leafs, flowers, fruits whatever u want and it is free. Very useful.
