run through of my working method for vray 2.4 sampling in arch vis scenes.
In a situation like this (room with a small window) wouldn't a vray plane light set up as a portal be a quicker solution and remove the dome light altogether?
Maybe yes, but then again maybe no. It depends on the HDRI itself and whether it produces sharp shadows. It has to be tested for each case.
So to get back on topic, the scene with the original settings (IM+LC and lots of subdivs for the dome light and maybe elsewhere) does indeed render for about 2h 10 min on the particular machine I am using, which is much longer than what I got with BF+LC. I have not profiled yet what causes the longer render time, as I want to make a few tests with V-Ray 2.4 first.

Vlado, could be a geometry problem again with some other problem still to verify? I mean, in video, avoiding the overlapping geometry, gaves rendertime improvements as joconnelli shown. Could it be related to the fact that most of yhe walls have no thickness? Seems to me, watching the video that walls have no thickness, I have not the file to be sure of it. I remember that was not suggested to use walls made with single plane to avoid problems to vray like irrad map artifacts, light leaks or something else.

So maybe joconnell there in that case, with his settings could get faster renderings respect what u was getting, going so to take two beers, instead to fight with a known problem u was facing.

I found joconnell always available, gentle person, and always very professional in every stupid doubt I got in the past, or everyone got and wrotes here in this forum.
He did a very appreciable thing, doing a tutorial so well detailed showing how to have always better control on the vray engine.
Even who knows it or part of it, in my opinion should thanks him for his tutorial.
I saw in the years very impressive artists in this site, and often I saw most of them was using so strange values in their usage of thi engine, that often gave longer rendertimes respect an optimized setting
Seems that not so much people here has the absolute right approach to vray settings or the complete knowledge (except Vlado and the developers of course) to get controlled rendertimes ever in every situation.
So those tutorials as the Akin Bilgic one should always be appreciated and respected.

Watched a bit of this. Looks great and glad to see that my process now looks similar. However, the rendertimes you were working with would mean I'd have got bored, used Solid Rocks and gone down to the pub for a few beers
(I think after just a couple of images employing these techniques, everybody will be able to skip a lot of the testing process and drill down to values that are about right straight away. Yes, each scene is unique, but if you do a lot of interiors (for instance) they will all be largely the same setup)
Here Embree was not the time saver I was hoping it to be, and it is a bit less forgiving to overlapping faces, but it still shaved off a few minutes of render time.
Here is a second attempt; only difference is "min shading rate" is 8, to put more samples on the lights/materials/GI rather than AA. Much cleaner for only slightly longer render time.
So here's a first test; I didn't test how long the original set up renders on that machine though; I just went straight to BF+LC (LC reverted to default settings, only left subdivs to 2000 and "use light cache for glossy rays" on) and your basic universal settings.
This is with V-Ray 3 though, will test 2.4 a bit later. I'm also doing a few more renders with different settings.
First of all Joconnell, thanks for your work, very interesting.
About rendertimes, in my opinion, yet cheking subpixel on, u could get good improvements in therms of speed. Then for other parameters to optimize, I have to watch carefully the other settings u used. Do u have high depth values in reflections?
