the best ice is the one from percydaman. all other look fake.

the problem is that ice would nned a 3d texture.
you will not get good looking ice with only one texture mapped on an object.

you need geometry in the ice (clipping planes) you need air bubbles, cracks etc.

      ice

Has anyone come up with a convincing icecube like the one illustrated by Percydaman yet?
Would be much appreciated if they could share, I havn't even come close, with a vray material it always seems to come out a greeny color.

      Cheers!

        my effort

Ok heres an ice material i've tryed to create.

        http://www.virtual-light.net/forums/ice.jpg

Obvioulsly a long way from Percydamans material, but I havn't been able to render his in an acceptable timescale (I need to animate.)

This material still needs a lot of work in my opinion so if anyone has any ideas/tips that won't singnificantly speed up rendering time i'd be very glad to here them.

        Heres the max file:

        Many thanks!

I took the liberty of taking your file and adjusting it some. Heres the result. Not perfect, but hope its a step in the right direction.

          Heres the adjusted scene file:

Keep in mind the scene was rendered using latest 1.46.xx version. Not sure how well itll work with older version.
