BTW, optimization is actually not technically focused on saving time (human or machine), but getting the best possible image within a manageable amount of time - it's the whole thing about adaptation - if you're shooting for absolute perfection, than a day spent optimizing is a drop in the bucket...time savings can be a bonus, however, once you push render. I saw a film last night that just totally speaks to my vis heart: "Tim's Vermeer". GO WATCH IT!!! and see just how long it takes a paint brush to do what vray does in a few minutes - the film really puts this whole idea of human vs machine time into perspective in terms of what it took a man back in 1650 to realistically replicate light. Also, it opens a great conversation about how society is prejudiced against machines creating art...And, yes, Vermeer used a lens and a mirror - no question!

I watched it today. Extremely interesting. I had already read both books that they talked about in the film years ago. The fact Vermeer created his paintings with NO drafting of the image on the canvass beforehand made me very suspect of him (Vermeer). Tim's addition of the mirror was beautiful. Low tech and elegant. Really amazing film. As a side note it just shows how incredible Michelangelo was. He painted in fresco and on his back. No time for lens or mirrors to help when the plaster is wet. Granted his work does not "glow" like Vermeers but after "Tim's Vermeer" we understand why.
