          very cool technique!
          is it possible to randomize tree colors?

          I noticed you deleted the shapemerge to modify the spline, I think you don't have to delete it, you can modify the spline shape inside existing shapemerge object.

            You can use the VRayMultiSubTex map; it has an option to produce random colors based on the instance ID. This can be used f.e. in a VRayCompTex texture in multiply mode to produce some variation for a texture map.
