making 3d rope

I got close with twisting some splines, I was wondering if there is any plugin to do something similar?

With too much twisting it starts to lose the overall shape of smooth rope and you can see the edges stick out too much....

The 6-7 smaller strands should twist one way, and the twist that twist everything should twist in the opposite direction. You are twisting both in the same direction which will never look correct.
