Are you having problems rendering the scene? Are you just looking for speed tweaks? THis scene has over 2.5 million polys. I'm able to render out a 2250 pixel wide IR map and the image in about 30 mins. Dual 3.0ghz with hyperthreading. BTW Vray loves hyperthreading. 4 buckets on a single machine.

Here, I had about 6 or 7 million Faces and Vray doesn't support
version 0.9...n... of course !
A lot of 3D trees.
To use it without any problem or almost, you have to switch on "INSTANTIATE" instead of "COPY" in Vray System slot.
You have to use intances, of course. You may have some strange results
Be carefull !
It reuse the same solution for all the instances, I think...
But it works with many polygons...
depending on the camera behaviour in the animation, it's possible to render in layers, that saved us a lot of trouble. We've put out an animation about a year ago that had extremely dense models (I forgot how many million polygons, but a lot). We just got Vray too, so it was our first animation with Vray involved and it was also a learning process for us. It was an architectural project, so we used to turn objects we know are not going to be seen by camera unrendereable. Like gafl said, use instances a lot. I'd advice against using displacement maps (I'm struggling with those right now)
