  • Importing and Exporting V-Ray with Blender w/ V-Ray Additions

Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask this, but I couldn't find a more appropriate sub-forum.

I am preparing to purchase V-Ray Standalone, so that I may start to use V-Ray with Blender, but I'm still unclear about the importing and exporting cross-platform compatibility. I've looked all over the place, and most of what I've found is pre-3.0, and 3.0 documentation is vague about it. Basically, I'm wondering if .vrscene/.vismat/.vrmat files exported with Standalone, using the Chaos Blender, can be opened with 3DMax, Maya with V-Ray, Modo, etc? I do see the ability to import from the Chaos Blender, and of course the addons have the exporter, but I wanted to see if there was cross-platform support. What sort of limitations exist, if any?

    Thanks in advance!

    Hey 3desprit,

vrscene is the native V-Ray format for scene description (contains geometry, materials, etc). It's mainly used by V-Ray Standalone. You could export vrscene files from almost all V-Ray platforms.

V-Ray for Blender is generating those files and renders them using V-Ray Standalone.

You could import materials from vrscene file in V-Ray For Maya and V-Ray For Blender.

V-Ray For Blender does _not_ export vismat files and could use vismat files in XML format.

      Ok, great. Thanks bdancer!

Just to make sure, V-Ray for Blender _can_ export .vrscene files that can be used in any other V-Ray platform?

3desprit, vrscene files are all the same everywhere, so yes V-Ray For Blender is exporting the files that could be reused everywhere.
