Vray does not start

Hi,
I am completely lost - I installed both vray standalone demo and vray for blender but when I hit render only a blank image in the image editor appears. There are no signs that the vray actually started. If I try to start only the vray.exe by double clicking it in the explorer nothing happens. The material preview does not show anything but black square.
I tried it on my pc and laptop with the same results.
These are the steps I made:
I downloaded and installed the vray standalone demo. Installation succesful.
I downloaded and installed the vray for blender. Installation succesful.
I opened the blender - in user preferences activated the addon, set the renderer to vray and thats basicly it.

Are there any extra steps needed to make it work?

My system is this:
Win7 64bit; Core2Quad cpu, nvidia gtx 560
