  • Volume Grids Matting

I'm having to go to some pretty extensive lengths to get the Volume Grids working together with other atmospherics like VRay Fog.

Here's the scenario: I'm working on a large CG city on fire and many of the Volume Grid smoke stacks appear in the distant fog. Currently I'm rendering the VRay Fog in it's own pass. I've tried...

    1) Rendering the Volume Grids IN the fog pass (the Volume Grids aren't affected by fog)
    2) Using a ZDepth pass for compositing (the Volume Grids don't appear in the ZDepth channel)
    3) Switching the Volume Grids to Volumetric Geo. (2x longer rendertime, but they now appear layered in the VRay fog)
    4) Switching the Volume Grids to Mesh mode (volume grids become completely solid, not use-able as matte objects)

The best solution I've found is setting the Volume Grids to Volumetric Geo. mode and rendering them WITH the VRay fog. Then, using the VRay Atmosphere pass, I can separate out the VRFog (the volume grids appear as holdouts/mattes in this pass), however the rendertime is very high (14min. VS 3min).

Does anybody have any experience with this issue or perhaps a better method?
