  • Help Req: Etched Glass ???

I'm trying to do etched glass for a kiosk display. The effect that I'm aiming for is the white lettering on clear glass that you get from nice etching, sorta like this effect:

    or this:

I'm currently using a map/mask material with a simple glass mat and the text in the material slots, and an alpha map of the text in the mask slot.

So far, the best results I've managed are either black letters or darkish gray letters, but not white.

Can anyone give any advice on how to get this effect or at least something similar to it that looks good/realistic?

You need to use a blend material to get a sand blasted look.

I use a vray material set up for clear glass in the first slot. The second slot set up a clear glass material but set the refract glossiness to .7 or so and the color white(adjust to preference). Use whatever mask you need in the mask slot.

You may have to set the subdivisions higher, 12 or 15, to get a good look but this should work fine. It actually looks pretty good.

Or just place that map right in the glossyness slot of the vray material. Getting exact values of gloss is hard this way, but not always a problem.
Adjust the values of the map with it's colour map curve in the output rollout.

the way i tend to acchieve is a bit more simple.
put a mask in the refract slot on a standard glass material with the etched area in black with a bit of noise.
then put the same map in the bump slot with the output reversed to give a slightly raised effect.

gives pretty good results for me i think
