Yes, that's exactly where I read that they are working on unlimited and nested layers! Hopefully we see it in the new version. Then I think it's safe to say that Blender will be a solid contender to the other 3d apps.

For me just watching the Cosmos Laundromat (entirely made with open source software including obviously Blender) tells me that Blender is already and forever a really serious contender to many other 3d apps!

hah! beat me to it

looks good. I don't know if he says it explicitly, but you can add many layers of particles to a single mesh - so you have trees, ground cover, flowers, boulders, etc. all on one mesh.

Just discover a really nice addon that is already coming with blender install: Mesh: looptools, you just have to load it in the user pref:
you can use the grease pencil to project loop on the stroke. the grease pencil is really the kind of feature that is missing in max.
