  • Clean-up scene: best practices

    Hi all,
I'm looking for the best solution to replicate the 3dsmax "save selected as" option.
In 3dsmax you can select objects and save them in a new file.

It's really helpful and I'd like to make the same in Blender.

From what I've understood there isn't this option in Blender so I thought to take the main scene, select what I'd like to keep, invert selection, delete the objects and save with a new file.

Ok..a bit time consuming workflow but it could work... but... now I have the problem that my scene contains also all the materials and nodes I used in the main scene...also if they're useless and not associated to objects, lights and so on.
Considering that most of these materials are linked to another files...my question is:

How could I clean scene from unnecessary nodes?

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Good question. I try to purge, but it doesn't seem to consistently clean out everything (go to "orphan data" in the outliner, uncheck the unused nodes, and click on "purge all") Blender does purge unused items when you close a file, but the Vray nodes are "sticky" because of the fake users that are needed to keep Blender from automatically purging the nodes.

Another way could be to make a new blender file and append the objects you want to keep. You can make a new "scene" in your original blender file and drag all the objects you want to keep over to the new scene tree. Then in the append, you can grab the new scene in its entirety.

Googleing I've found that it's possible to make a Copy&Paste into a new file.
It seems, at the moment, the best solution...at least the quick way.
