    Hello Samuel,

some weeks ago I have downloaded the DEM date of the area where I live. But the landscape has been very round and not very detaild.
Do you have an idea where I could find crisp, high detailed data for my area?

I am living in the Rhine valley very close to the border of france (2 km away). Between the cities called "Freiburg" and "Karlsruhe"

    Best regards,
    Mirko

      Hello,

Did you use DEM or SRTM Data ?
The way I described above uses SRTM Data wich should be available
in a 76m resolution for the whole world.
If you did it that way and you import the converted SRTM -> DEM
into max using the habware plugin, You will get resolution parameters
for the landscape in the modifier dialog ! By default it has a step size of
20x20 wich will not look very detailed !!

By the way, the SRTM ressource ftp from above is no longer in service
and the SRTM´s are now available from here
      ftp://e0dps01u.ecs.nasa.gov/srtm/

Be patient.. this server is much slower than the previous one.
And I had to try several times until I could get a connection

      cheers

        Thanks for your help.

Unfortunately the folder "SRTM" seems not to be available anymore
It is written in italic letters and an error message apperas when I click on it.
I tried the folder called "SRTM30" but I think that's not the right one. I could not find my region.
I found my region (N46E00 in the "Eurasia" folder some weeks ago. But there you will find *.hgt files. When I opened such a file in den DEM Programm, the mountains have not been very "crisp". I thought there should be some more detailed stuff available, too.
Or is "*.hgt" the file extension of SRTM?

        Gruß
        Mirko

Well that´s probabely the highest resolution of this region
that´s available to the public. You can contact the DLR the have
38m Data.. but they want 400eur for their terrain. And it only covers
          Germany partial.

And also take a look out of the window to make shure that there at least
some mountains to be displayed )

Keep in mind when open such a file in max you are hundreds of miles
above the ground. A mountain of 50 or 100m won´t be seen to spectacular !

          cheers
