OK. I stopped lurking and obtained posting priviledges.
I'm a recent convert from Finalrender, and I am still getting used to V-Ray. What I usually do, though, is a direct light at 1 with a slight hint of yellow and a skylight. I override the max environment and set the sky multiplier to 0.15. I was reducing the saturation of the blue for the sky (from the VRay default), but lately I have become quite fond of the default.
I like the look of linear color-mapping for most scenes, but I usually end up bringing up the dark end to reveal more detail in the shadows and reducing the high end to compensate for blown-out whites. With a recent scene I was at something like: 1.6 0.85.
Or, I just use an HDR image for all of my lighting.
I'm ready for the exterior lighting show-and-tell demo whenever someone comes up with a scene for us to use. I love the idea.
