  • See Through

In case you did not know:

Take a box flip normals and make a quick room. But there is a problem with Vray if we try to see through walls like for a birds-eye view.

Use a double sided material with Vray mat on the facing side. for the backside use the Utility Material from Blur and set Render RayLevel between 1 and whatever. Instant culling...

Here such a box inside which I placed a GeoSphere hemisphere (Normals flipped and just larger than figure) and rotated so back side is facing camera. Forward facing has the "kitchen probe". Lightmap + Irr from file.

Ok, forget the GeoSphere and just put the HDR map in the environment GI and Reflection if you like and light the interior through the walls!!!

      Isn't that cool?

      End of tip for sure,

        Hi,

I didn't get that right (english is not my primary language) Most confusing part was this:
"Utility Material from Blur and set Render RayLevel between 1 and whatever"
Can you please do a step by step guide?
        Thanks

        Best regards,
        Daxiid

Here is a description of the Utility Material. Search and find it, install it and try using it as stated in the above post.

maybe if you provided a sample scene it would be helpful. I must confess, I am a touch confused.

              Percy,

I do not mind sharing that same scene, however I do not have a way to upload it. If you PM me with a link to were I could upload it I'll send it to you.

              I'll try to clarify:

Make a box the size of a room for example, and apply a standard material and place a light inside. Create a camera as if you were looking from the ouside.

Render with Max/Viz (I still only have Viz 4) and you will not see the outside or the inside illuminated. render with Vray and you get the same. Now take the box and flip the Normals. Render again with Max/Viz and you "see through" to the illuminated interior. Now switch to Vray and still you can't see through to the interior. Why? Well, I am sure you know why.

From here to get Vray to "behave like Max/Viz..." change the box material to the Utility Material mentioned previously. Set as described and Vray now renders the inside of the room just like Max/Viz.

Now check this out! Place an object outside the room that would be otherwise be illuminated by the light you placed inside the box, if you were to hide or delete the box(don't hide or delete). Render and no light
escapes the room to light the object.

Still with Vray as Renderer, move the object inside the room and the light ouside the room. Render again and this time light enters the room and not only illuminates the inside of the room, but also the object.

The outside light could be Vray's GI Skylight or whatever you like.

              Hope that is clearer,

              Ismael

                          Ooops!

                          On further tests:

Light does go through back face and shadows too if you make exclude the box from casting shadows in the light rollout.

Environment does not get through for illumination or reflections. I did not realize one of my side walls went A.W.O.L. (military term), and that is how those got through to the inside. It was a nice dream while it lasted.
Maybe one for the wisglist section.
