  • Wood with Shimmery Figure

I've been struggling trying to make a wood material showing a nice figure. Figure is that shimmery, almost iridescent effect certain cuts of wood. Think of the back of a nice guitar or violin.

Attached are some extreme examples for reference.

I've tried using a vrayblend mtl with one mat wood, the other 'goldish' then used a mask for the blend. But it just doesn't read right. Has anyone pulled this off or have any ideas? I can't find anything on the webs.

    Thanks in advance!

Take a look at the VrScans. Some of the wood materials are behaving exactly the way you want. Look at the sphere to the right: https://youtu.be/eBdLRFaJ4yM?t=4s

Yes that's exactly it! I'll checkout the trial. That being said, anyone know how to 'fake' the effect with regular vraymtls?

It is like a coating in my eyes. How did you set up your material? Maybe a more complicated fresnel setting would help, and maybe a subtle bump underneath the coat or on the coat...

its not really like a coating...its more like various types of anisotropy across the wood and deep within the material...it will be VERY hard to replicate unless you use vrayscans

That looks like a map in the anisotropic rotation slot. Play around with a noise map there. That and anisotropy itself. I'd try a constant value there first though.

Did you get somewhere? I'd love to see your shader.
