  • Materials for wood surfaces.

    So how would you experts go ahead in order to produce wood materials when the surface have depth and gaps like in these pictures?
    Ceilings that is.

    Hi Per,

    Hope you're doing well.

    Here is an approach I would use:
    Use displacement in the V-Ray material. You can also take advantage of our new Gradient texture (available in V-Ray 3.6 for Revit) to create the black&white stripes that you will need for the displacement.
    Here is a step-by-step guide what to do:
    1. Start creating the material in the V-Ray Standalone Material Editor (you can also use one of the ready-to-use wood materials)
    2. Then go to the Advanced tab. Scroll down to the bottom and under Maps, enable the Displacement parameter.
    3. Set the Mode to 2D and in the texture slot put a Gradient map
    4. In the Gradient map settings -> set the preset to Custom, Type to U and the Interpolation to None. This should result in black and white stripes in the preview. Now in the texture placement, set the repeat U/V to something like 30/30.
    5. Go back to Displacement and play with the amount parameter until you get the desired result (set the material preset to Wall or Wall Closeup so that you can see how it will look like when applied to a wall)

    Another one: you can try with a native Revit material with a Cutout texture assigned (which is equal to a V-Ray material with an Opacity texture assigned). This, however, would create a flat result. You won't achieve the depth that can be achieved with the displacement.

      I have a similar question, but the "voids" Per Morten is looking for I need to be "solids". I'm trying to create a Board & Batten siding material, don't care about wood texture, but would like to be able to switch colors and get a consistent result with the batten spacing. I have come close to what I would like to achieve, but the battens need to be further apart. I would like to know how I can increase their spacing without increasing their individual widths/sizes. I guess I can't just upload the actual .vrmat I created, which would make this a lot easier, but I've attached a screenshot of the "editing" I've done with the Displacement Map. Not much as you'll see. The rendering results are REALLY close to what I'm looking for, but again, I'd like to space the battens further apart.

      Any help would be great and if there's a means for me to just upload the .vrmat I created, I'm glad to do so.

            I'm pasting my response here in case someone else has a similar question. The material is attached as well.

            In this particular case (and with this material), I would recommend you using the Gradient procedural texture instead of a bitmap.
            Set the type of the gradient to vertical direction (U). The Interpolation should be set to None (this creates perfect stripes). Move the points to adjust the exact stripe width. Then you can increase the Repeat U/V under Texture Placement. In my case, I have put it to 5. It can be left at 1 though.

            Now assign the material in V-Ray for Revit and play with the sample size width to adjust the width the way you want it.
            One more thing, when you run an Interactive rendering, you can also open the material, change the stripe width (or any other parameter), save the material (or enable the Autosave Material on change option under Settings) and the render will update. Thus, you can immediately see all changes that you are doing.

            In case you want to be super precise when setting up the distance between the batts, then use a temporary Revit family consisting of 2 batts with their exact size and distance between them. Run Interactive rendering mode and adjust the displacement of the material to fit those batts. Delete the family after that.
