  • jpeg sequence output crashes all Max versions

As the title; I assume this has something to do with the ffmpeg that CP uses.
It took me a while to figure out what was going on but it is repeatable and I tried with Max22 and 24.
I tested it against a sequnce output from AE and that ofc works as expected.

I 'might' be mistaken about this but I've deleted the test frames I used, so can't check again.

What this could be is a Max bug of some sort.
What seems to be happening is that this particular sequence is 5000 frames and I have a crash
if I try to load them, then subsequently if I try to load e.g. half the frames using the start/end dialogue, then it still crashes.
If I split the frames into 2 folders then it will load half with no problem.

Hi, thanks for posting. What are you doing in Chaos Player? Open a exr sequence for example and then File > Export Layer Sequence > JPEG Sequence? I tried this but no crash. Tested with 5 frames though.

Nothing wrong with Chaos player, only that Max crashes when trying to load the sequence I output from CP.
It made me think it was somehow the ffmpeg codec but now I think it's just that Max has trouble handling a certain
frame count, then gets confused trying to reload fewer frames for that session. Weird but I haven't more time to troubleshoot it.

Player uses libjpeg to write jpg files directly - it doesn't use ffmpeg in this case, but that's probably not important in this case.
You mentioned that there's no problem with jpegs saved from AE - are there any differences if you compare the output to Player? For example, is it something in the filename that Max has trouble with, or is it something with the file itself?
Can you get us one file from Player and one from AE for debugging?

Sorry but this thread is almost a month old, so I have moved on from that project, having found alternative solutions.

I understand. Thanks anyways, it's my fault that I couldn't answer earlier.
