  • Any ways to bake or render simplified fur ?

    Any ideas ?
I just can't seem to trust myself
So what chance does that leave, for anyone else?

We are not aware of any good solution to do this.

If it's V-Ray Fur used to create grass or carpets, you can possibly replace it with small instanced meshes.

We want to explore support for V-Ray Fur (and other hair solutions), however, performance might not be great.
Here are a few points to consider:

    1. Only triangles and the bounding box hierarchy are accelerated by the RT cores.
For hair strands we would have to implement our own custom primitive and intersect it on the CUDA cores.
This is what we do in V-Ray GPU with RTX enabled.

    2. In the future, nVidia might add hardware acceleration for hair strands, but at this point, this is only wishful thinking.

    3. We can approximate the hair strands with triangles, but results might turn out to be very different compared to what V-Ray would render.

I'm only about preview quality and maybe a technique to convert fur of any sort to meshes or smth like that. One click Our chars are full of fur, so maybe there's a solution outside...
