  • Lavina - Amazing as always - A few questions

    Dear team,

I hope you are all well and keeping healthy.

This is my second post on the forums.

My first was a post regarding the Vray 5 Beta and my praises, sprinkled with a few personal issues that were resolved quickly in the current update.

Once again I have to give praise. This is really a brilliant and easy to use piece of software that creates all kinds of opportunities for myself and others in my field (architectural visualisation).

So I must start by saying thank you to you all for creating, updating and maintaining it.

Please excuse me if I am simply not understanding something or if I am not understanding the actual limitations of raytracing using the gpu itself, as I have always done CPU rendering.

A few questions and issues that I have so far:

    1. Who exactly is this product aimed at? This is just a personal question due to the nature of the controls within the program. I am aware that it is still a Beta and many things will be worked out. But I do feel that in the same way that Vray is now very streamlined and easy to use even for beginners, Lavina is a little confusing to me in terms of interface and usability.

    2. The settings - I am the type of person that will wait longer for a cleaner result, or turn settings way up past where they should be in order to get the desired results. I think it is maybe just my understanding is lacking, but my question is:

What would be the optimum way to ensure that, from a settings perspective, a rendered frame or frame sequence has the least noise?

Is it just the number of bounces set in the popup that appears when you press the "render high quality sequence button", or is it affected by the parameters in the render tab top left, or is it also affected by the advanced settings? I have no idea and it is very difficult to test these things with the current controls.

3, I know we can pause manually, but Is there a way that rendering can be paused automatically after a frame sequence or single image is finished rendering, that way if someone steps away from their PC once they start a long animation, then we dont have to worry about the graphics card running for nothing to render the main image in the window once the animation is done.

    4. Instanced lights - I am not sure why lights that are instanced in vray all show up independently in Lavina, I understand this gives great control, but to me it would be more useful to have them stay as instances so they can be adjusted quickly, especially if overall lighting was already worked out in the actual vray scene.

    5. I am having an issue with Vraylight material applied to a simple object in the scene. I see it says vraylight material is supported in the documents, but when I bring the scene into Lavina (clean, no export problems), any objects that had the light material are simply not in the Lavina scene.

Am I doing something wrong? The object was a simple box with the vraylight material applied illumination both turned on and off it was the same, it just didn't show up in Lavina. All other "real" lights were fine.

    6. Is it possible to have objects not cast/receive shadows? In my renderings I often use a backplate which is a vraylight material with a texture on a simple plane with "cast/receive shadows" turned off in the object properties, so I can control its brightness and it produces nice refelctions without affect the light entering the scene even if it is right outside a window.

In Lavina, obviously this plane emits light, affects reflections and looks good, but it then blocks light from the environment from entering the scene.

Also relating this to my problem in point 5, this plane has a vraylight material applied (with texture in slot) and comes into lavina and works perfectly, but other objects with a just a vraylight material applied do not.

    7. Would it be possible to have some form of layer system that matches layers created in the 3dmax file to make it easier to identify things?

These are all the questions/issues I have for now.

Once again the project is already running like a bomb and is great to use, so well done to everyone involved!

I hope that the rest of the development goes smoothly and is not too stressful for you all.

    Thank you for your time.

    regards,

    George

Can you elaborate a bit more on what you find confusing ?

Note that for the next version we've already removed some of the unnecessary controls in File -> Advanced Scene Settings.
And generally, you shouldn't worry about any of the settings there, unless you have a specific issue, ask about it here on the forum and we recommend changing one of the options there.

You just need to increase the number of Samples in the popup (there is no bounces option there).
This is similar to V-Ray's Max subdivs.
10000 Lavina samples are equal to 100 V-Ray max subdivs.
Note that being a GPU renderer Lavina does a lot less per sample, so you need to have more of them.
I would recommend ~10000 samples for a clean image, but this depends on the scene as well.

In future versions, Lavina will also have V-Ray's adaptive image sampling, then you will be able to specify a noise threshold as well.
This can lead to faster renders, as some pixels will reach the noise threshold before they reach the max samples, and Lavina will be able to concentrate on the rest.

3, Is there a way that rendering can be paused after a frame sequence or single image is finished rendering, that way if someone steps away from their PC once they start a long animation, then we dont have to worry about the graphics card running for nothing to render the main image in the window once the animation is done.
That's a good idea, it can be done yes.

    4. Instanced lights - I am not sure why lights that are instanced in vray all show up independently in Lavina, I understand this gives great control, but to me it would be more useful to have them stay as instances so they can be adjusted quickly, especially if overall lighting was already worked out in the actual vray scene.
We have a solution for this for future builds.

If you have direct illumination enabled in the V-Ray Light material, the objects with that material are turned into mesh lights, which Lavina doesn't support yet.
Otherwise, it should work, but note that the opacity texture is not supported.
I would need a scene to investigate if it doesn't work when direct illumination is disabled.

    Greetings,

Thank you very much for your lightning fast response Vladimir!

      My responses:

      1. It was mainly all of the internal settings that I was thinking about, but I see in you mentioned that they may be streamlined. So 100% with you there.

      2. Thank you for clearing that up. I experimented with up to 4000 samples but now I see there may be value in going even higher when there is time.

      3. Would be awesome not to come back to a gpu running at 100% haha.

      4. Excellent again thanks.

      5. I will try again with the same scene and another one before I zip it up and send to you. Just to make sure I am not being stupid.

I have tried it with both options (on and off) and as mentioned my backplate with a vraylightmtl and a texture in the slot came in to Lavina fine and works as expected, but my other simple objects with vraylightmtl applied were not showing up at all.

Completely understood regarding to opacity (not supported) and direct illumination (must be off). Will leave that turned off and test again and be in touch.

Thank you again for your quick response and informative answers.
