  • Exporting scene from Max, importing to Lavina - half geometry missing

    Hi Guys

I exported a scene from Max, which resulted in a roughly 1.5GB vrscene file.

When I import that into Lavina, most (but not all) of the forestpack objects are missing. Is this due to a lack of RAM on my GPU, or did something go wrong in the export phase?

When I import same scene into Max, I can't tell what is going on as its 1 object, same wirecolour and can't make out what is what. The imported scene in Max seem to crash Max if I try and render via CPU

Would be great if we had a tool in Max, that would tell us how much ram etc we need to run the scene in Lavina (or in Max GPU for that matter)

    Kind Regards,
    Morne

If it was due to lack of RAM, Lavina would crash most likely, so it's probably not that.

What's the reported GPU memory usage in the lower right corner of Lavina ?

When you export the .vrscene, there is an option to render with V-Ray Standalone.
    Can you try that ?
If it renders successfully, but the forestpack objects are missing, it's most likely something to do with the export process.

We will need the .max file to debug the issue either way.

Does the forestpack display mode make a difference for export purposes? (mesh vs point cloud for example)
....or it all gets converted to vrscene no matter what display mode forest (and railclone) is set to?

      Kind Regards,
      Morne

I don't know, sorry. It could be.
Maybe someone else from the team would know.

          Hi Morne,

The display mode shouldn't affect the way it is exported. Have you tried rendering the scene via the "Export and render" button (what Vladimir suggested earlier)? If the forest geometry shows there, it is present in the vrscene.
Are you loading the vrscene from a network location by any chance?

          Best regards,
          Simeon

The project is much further along now, than what it was with my original post. In its current state, it took 40 minutes just to export to the vrscene, which resulted in a 4GB file. After that, vray standalone kicked in, and started doing "something". A command prompt cam up with various things similar to the log in max, with things loading etc. The VFB came up, but the calculations of whatveer standalone was doing, was slowly using more and more ram, after 2 hours the ram use was still going up, but visually it looks like it was still calculating stuff and still did not actually start to render, so I just "end task" the lot.

I exported the vrscene file to my local c:\
All the assets are on a NAS and an external drive
            Kind Regards,
            Morne

Even though standalone didnt render, I tried to import the 4GB file into Lavina 4.4
After a while, it give me these kinds of errors:

So, does the same scene render fine in V-Ray CPU in 3ds Max ?

We would need the .max file to debug both the slow starting of the V-Ray Standalone rendering and the crash in Lavina.
My guess is the crash is caused by insufficient VRAM, but maybe we can figure out a way to at least not crash and show more meaningful errors in this case.

                  Renders fine in Max CPU
                  Does not render in standalone
                  Does not import into Lavina

I'll see what can be done to get the scene to you

                  Kind Regards,

I've been doing some testing with ForestPro and it seems either the ForestPro API or our own .vrscene exporter doesn't support Template geometry.
If Template geometry is used (One Plane, Two Planes, Three Planes, ..., Simple 3D Tree) the ForestPro object will come out empty in V-Ray Standalone/Cloud/GPU and Lavina.
You have to use Custom Object as the geometry. I am not sure why this is not mentioned in the docs, whether it's a recent regression or something else.
