  • Vray Light Mesh support?

    Hi Chaos,

Does Lavina support Vray Light Mesh?
Initial testing on some scenes looks like it doesnt....
    just want to confirm this.

You are right - it is not supported. You can also check for supported features here: https://docs.chaosgroup.com/display/LAV/3ds+Max

Just curious if it's something that's on a roadmap for the forseeable future? Or did you already choose not to support this feature on the long run?

Yes, we do plan to support the mesh light.

Even if this post is quite old, I solved this myself by applying a script in 3dsmax that converts the Meshlight to an Editable Mesh with a vraylightmaterial on and the same intensity and texture (at least default image values for intensity). Disadvantage, that the material doesn't popup in vantage to be editable to adjust intensity further. And it is an "indirect" light source then? Not sure, if this means that rays are traced a bit slower than for a light. So supporting a mesh light from Vantage will be great.

Yes, it's indirect light source in this case and if it's small and very bright, this can lead to lots of GI noise.

Support for mesh lights is still planned, but we haven't gotten there quite yet.

And just for interest, since our scenes usually have some hundreds of lights, many of them being bounced a lot of time and not directly visible, at the moment there is a performance boost if they are replaced by meshes with VraylightMtl. This works at least for area lights and Meshlights. But has the disadvantage as you said that the light is indirect and you can not make the light source invisible. But maybe there are optimization methods for direct lights in the future, like importance treatment and so on. Even if I think that you do this already
