does vantage have its own separate license, or does it rely on an active vray license?
i've just installed vantage and also upgraded my license server but i'm getting a 197 error

Yes, Vantage has it's own license now. You will obtain a complimentary 1 year license when you go through the procedure of downloading Vantage.
Please note that while you will be presented with a "shopping cart" experience, no credit card is required and nothing will be billed to your account.

thanks, it's not showing up in my license server at the moment. assuming it should be added automatically?

Check your my.chaosgroup.com account - it's possible that it's there and you're using online licensing.

actually, my vray next license for 3ds max doesn't show up in my account either even though it shows in my license server...i think i might have 2 accounts under different logins that need merging
