  • VRayNormalMap

Hello. Is the VRayNormalMap supported in Vantage yet? Any idea of timing for this? Thank you so much.

    Hi dan_oken,

Normal map support will be available in the next release of Chaos Vantage. We should release a new build in the next couple of weeks.

    Best regards,

So I tried playing with this but I couldn't get it to work. In particular I was working on a grass material. I had an excellent one that I made in Octane and was hoping to recreate it here. Basically just a noise map under a grass texture which made grass REALLY fast without having to use ForestPack.

      1. Tried directly in a material without a normal map but one converted from color to bump and bump to normal. No luck.
      2. I tried it within regular vraydisplacement modifier no luck.
      3. Tried bumping up subdivisions and under the vraydisplacement stack. No luck.

      4. Tried normal displacement within max - luck but it sucks. But then again it worked before. Is there something I am missing?

You are talking about the V-Ray displacement modifier which is something else entirely and is not supported in Vantage.

        1. Tried directly in a material without a normal map but one converted from color to bump and bump to normal. No luck.
A screen-shot or a .max scene of your setup will be helpful in understanding if it's something that's implemented in Vantage or not.

So the normal map (to achieve displacement) is supported through VRaymtl Bump slot only?
I came back from a much older version of VRay from almost 10 years ago. Some things have changed as it used to have a different displacement section.

I'll play with this later. I tried doing this yesterday but was getting any results from my setup.

Vantage does not support displacement, only normal mapping.

              Hello,
Can we have a separate global on/off switch only for normal map, right now its combined with bump. This will help to only disable normal map if not required in a scene. We need this feature because after importing lot of assets with normal map we can switch it off globally and still keep bump map on. We are working on very large scenes and we dont want to use normal map but still use bump map.
              Thanks.

                          Hi vishwanath_mani,

We have implemented in 1.8.0 a separate toggle and intensity multiplier for normal maps in the Render tab. You need to have Dynamic textures enabled, however, in order to free the memory needed for normal maps.

                          Best regards,
                          Alexander
