  • Live Link and Vrscene file

    Hi!

Very confused about the difference between livelink and VRSCNENE file...
I started working with Vantage and saved a scene, both in Max and in Vantage, same name. I rebooted the computer and then reloaded the scene in Max but when I re-entered Vantage in Livelink, it didn't save my work.
I reloaded the VRSCENE file and the work was saved, but I can't work in real time like in Live Link...

How do you go back to work in live link mode with all the changes i made on Vantage? After we exited the file?
I would appreciate an explanation because I don't understand it

    Another question,
How can I render Vray elements with Vantage?

    Thanks

    Hi elad_haqa,

The difference between Live Link, vrscene and Vantage file are:
    • in Live Link, the scene that is coming from the host app(in your case Max) "lives" in the RAM and is not saved on disk because this way changes made in the host app are transferred much faster than if the scene is first saved and then imported in Vantage.
    • In the vrscene the whole scene is saved on disk - geo, materials, lights, textures, settings, etc. which can be loaded in Vantage without the need for the host app to be opened and take up system resources.
    • The Vantage file doesn't contain the scene itself(geometry, materials, lights, etc). It references a scene(vrscene, fbx, obj, etc) and stores changes made to it (eg. stored cameras, post effects, exposure, environment settings, etc.).
With that in mind, when using live link and you save a vantage file only the following is saved in the vantage file:
    • store cameras
    • post effects,
    • exposure,
    • environment settings
    • camera animation sequence
    • render settings
When you close the live link connection, the scene stays open but you cannot:
    • transform objects
    • reassign materials
    • edit lights
    • import external files
You have to export a vrscene file and open it in Vantage.

How do you go back to work in live link mode with all the changes i made on Vantage? After we exited the file?
If you have saved a vantage file you can either start a live link or open a vrscene and go to File>Open Scene as Config Only and load the saved vantage file. This should apply the changes to the scene.

How can I render Vray elements with Vantage?
Currently you can only export Bumped Normals, ZDepth, Velocity, SelfIllumination and Background. You have to specify .exr output file type and they will be generated automatically. Additional render elements are being worked on and will become available later this year.

      Hi Alexander,

Is there a limit on the amount of polygons to use in the live link?

I'm doing a big residential project, I'll need to throw grass at all, how to optimize this for the vantage?

I once auditioned with a large scene and the livelink just stop communicating with vantage.

        Hi Pablo,

There isn't a set limit to the amount of polygons but with many polygons the export/transfer to Vantage will become slow.

An optimization that I can think at the moment is to use relatively low-poly meshes scattered with Chaos Scatter or Forest pack.

I once auditioned with a large scene and the livelink just stop communicating with vantage.
This maybe caused by very large amount and heavy meshes that are being transferred and they took very long time to export and maybe hit some timeout limit(I don't know if such thing exist, I am speculating). Can you try to reduce the amount of instances or reduce the poly count of the instanced meshes and try again?

        Best regards,
