What's the trick for getting proper daylight lighting with the physical sky option in Vantage? Whatever I do, my images look like it's an overcast day.

Question...if I don't have a vraysky material in max can I still use the Vantage sunlight option?

I think I figured it out...I need to change to override then I get the contrast in direct sunlight and shadowed areas.

        Hi Luma3d,

There shouldn't be anything special that you have to do in order to have proper shadows from the sun. The shadows do depend on the type of sky model and if the sun is enabled or not(by default the Vantage sun is disabled).

Question...if I .don't have a vraysky material in max can I still use the Vantage sunlight option?
Yes, we added this in 1.8.2, before you were required to have a sky set in Max in order to be able to modify it in Vantage. If you are using live link, however I would advise you to set your lighting inside Max.

I think I figured it out...I need to change to override then I get the contrast in direct sunlight and shadowed areas.
Are you referring to Color mode inside the sun settings? That shouldn't have effect on shadow sharpness and only light color specified in the color swatch. The sun size is responsible for shadow blurriness - the larger the size, the softer the shadow.

So what does each color mode in the Vantage Default Sun do? Filter, Direct, and Override?

            Hi Luma3d,

The Color mode behaves the same way as in V-Ray:
Color mode – Affects the way the color in the Color parameter affects the color of the sun.
Filter – Shifts the hue of the sun towards the color specified in the Color parameter.
Direct – Sets the color of the sun to match the color in the Color parameter. In this case the intensity of the light does not depend on the V-Ray Suns position in the sky and is controlled through the Intensity parameter.
Override – Sets the color of the sun to match the color in the Color parameter but the intensity of the light still depends on the sun's position in the sky.
Could you send the scene for us to investigate if what I described in my previous post didn't work?

            Best regards
            Alexander
