  • Problems with Vantage

I don't know what's happening, but the latest versions of Vantage have been getting worse.

    • Chaos Scatter
In the latest version, Chaos Scatter hardly works. Neither the maps nor the brush work as expected.
    • Memory Management Issues
Vantage crashes when moving an object or changing the camera in a scene that consumes 8-10GB of VRAM, even when using an RTX 4090. This happens across multiple projects, not just one.
    • Object Deletion Issues
When using Vantage in standalone mode, sometimes after deleting an object and saving the file, the object reappears when reopening the file. Even if you manage to delete the object, sometimes it stays and can't be selected.
    • Rendering Problems with Large Images
A scene consuming 6GB of VRAM will crash or increase the render time drastically when trying to render an image above 5k. However, the render works fine when switching back to a 4k preset, which is inconsistent.
    • Missing Basic Features
Basic features are still missing, despite numerous requests from users. Chaos seems more focused on launching another software with a different UI rather than addressing these ongoing issues.
    • Timeline Issues
You can't select multiple cameras or transitions to delete or move them. You have to select one by one or delete everything at once.
      Displacement Issues
The displacement feature in Vantage seems almost useless, as to use it effectively, you have to drastically subdivide the mesh. If you have to do that, it’s better to use a displacement modifier instead. Additionally, even with a 24GB GPU, Vantage crashes due to excessive memory consumption.

While typing this topic, I paused Vantage on my other machine after finishing the animation render. When I returned and unpaused it, Vantage had crashed. Note: The animation was already finished.

        Hi Pablo,

In the latest version, Chaos Scatter hardly works. Neither the maps nor the brush work as expected.
The latest features that are introduced in V-Ray 7 are not supported and we will be adding support for it in our next release 2.7, which should be coming in February. If the issues are not related to the new features then please send us a scene with the issue so we can investigate it. You can use the Chaos Help form with a link to the forum thread: https://support.chaos.com/hc/en-us/requests/new You will have to include all asset files.

Again, send the scene for us to investigate. Does this happen on old projects or with newer projects?

Does this happen with the NVidia denoiser, the Intel Open Image Denoiser or without denoiser?

Basic features are still missing, despite numerous requests from users.
Can you be more specific on the basic features that are missing in your case? Because there are certainly features that require a lot of work and planning for them would push back other features that are also needed in Vantage.

Thank you for the feedback. Please add all improvement related ideas that you have in the Chaos Vantage Idea portal(http://chaos.com/ideas/vantage) so it can get a vote so we can plan for it accordingly.

The Vantage displacement is different than the V-Ray one and sometimes will require, as you mention, additional tessellation. Unfortunately I don't think there is an accurate way for us to calculate the needed amount of VRAM for displacement before loading the scene or before starting rendering. We could research if there i something that could be done.

Maybe there has been some GPU TDR event and Vantage couldn't recover properly. I have experienced similar thing with 3ds Max.

When you say before which version were you using? If the issue is only reproducible then can you please send us the scene or a similar scene that the issue is reproducible so we can investigate it?

        Best regards,
        Alexander

          Hi, Alexander.
          Thank you for your response.

All scenes crash unexpectedly when I'm working in LiveLink. The solution I found was to pause Vantage while moving something in Max, which is not very productive. Additionally, this happens in standalone mode as well. The amount of memory Vantage is consuming is absurd, even after reducing the size of my maps, the issue doesn't improve, which didn't happen before.

My feedback is based on my daily use of Vantage, which is my main rendering software. Moreover, I have been using it since the beta, and I can confidently tell you that most of these issues didn't occur before. Everything worsened with Vray 7 and the latest Vantage updates, especially after version 2.6.*
