  • Chaos Vantage v1.2.0 - Washed out textures

    Hello,

Yesterday, after I have updated to Chaos Vantage v1.2.0 from v1.1.1, I have noticed that some of my previous saved scenes have objects with washed out textures, which btw never happened before.

Can be the glossy Fresnel reflections? or the new clear coat in VRayMtl? I mention I export the vray scenes from 3ds Max 2020 using V-Ray Next Update 3.2 not Vray 5.

I have attached two screenshots (one in v1.1.1 and one in the new v1.2.0) that illustrate the change/issue in how the materials renders.

The scene is from Archexteriors vol. 34 - scene 03.

My drivers are Nvidia SD Drivers 461.92 with a RTX 3090 on Windows 10 x64 Build 1909 (18363.1440).

    Thanks

P.S. BTW, is there a way to downgrade to v1.1.1?

    Hi

It is very possible that the new material features are the cause. Specifically glossy Fresnel, because Coat is present only in V-Ray 5. Which is closer to a V-Ray Next render -- 1.1.1 or 1.2.0? It would be best if you could isolate a material or two and export them to a small vrscene file (+textures) for us to take a look and make sure.

If you need to downgrade, you just have to go to the product download page and click the "show older versions" checkbox. It wasn't available earlier, but we've just re-enabled it now.

Whoops, never mind - we do have a copy of this scene, so we don't need you to send a piece of it.

        Hi Nikola,

In my experience 1.1.1 is near identical to V-Ray Next renderer.

I have also tried some of my custom scenes and the behavior is the same...washed out textures and much brighter GI.

Right now I will stay on 1.1.1 because I get stellar results with it.

I really hope this "issue" or function will be sorted out

Anyway, keep it up because Vantage is one of the best real-time ray-traced app I have used so far.

It's most likely a bug in our new glossy fresnel code. We will fix it as soon as possible and release a hotfix.

I decided to fix some other related things along with it, so the fix is taking a bit longer.
Hopefully soon we will release a fixed build.

We've just released update 2.1 (version 1.2.1), which has all the stuff from update 2 plus the fix for the issue you reported in this thread.
It also has some other improvements.

                    Hello again,

I have tested the 1.2.1 version and indeed it fixes the the washed out textures but I also noticed that maybe some textures, especially the trees does not render correctly with the 1.2.1 version (see the screenshots).

I have also noticed a slight change in grass render too.

Maybe I'm wrong but please take a look at the screenshots I have attached.

                    Thanks

                      These changes are expected.
With this build we have support for the double-sided option of the V-Ray material, which changes how materials with refraction+diffuse are rendered (among other things).

So results should be closer to V-Ray.
However, we still don't have VRay2SidedMtl support, that will hopefully come soon.
All the changed materials you see are using it and that's most likely the reason they don't match the V-Ray render completely.

If you want the old behavior for some reason, you will have to use the old build.
I still think the new results look better even though they don't match V-Ray completely.

                      Greetings,
