  • Image never resolving

I'm testing a different scene. Admittedly it is very heavy and because I was getting the ram warning I disabled that to actually link the scene.
Now it says it is only using 6.86g of vram, so that is odd, or is that a false readout as I disabled the safe limit?
I noticed that it actually went down from 7g after deleting something, so I'm confused as to why it wouldn't load normally.

As a side issue, I just found that there was something that was preventing the image resolving at all; it is having ProOptimiser on something.
Once I collapsed it Vantage was happy again....I like a happy Vantage

The correctness of the reported memory usage doesn't depend on whether you have safe allocations enabled or not.

I noticed that it actually went down from 7g after deleting something, so I'm confused as to why it wouldn't load normally.
Windows tells Vantage that it has a certain GPU memory "budget". When safe allocations are enabled, we try to fit within that budget.
The budget could be less than your GPU RAM depending on what other apps are running.

Maybe that modifier is causing constant geometry updates ?
If that's the case, that would be something to report on the V-Ray for 3ds Max forum.
Most likely it affects at least V-Ray GPU.

So it doesn't really matter if I leave it off...it won't cause harm elsewhere? As long as it's only maybe a crash then it's fine for me.

I'll mention the modifier thing on the gpu board; just assumed that as Vantage uses the gpu, that it may be worth mentioning in case anyone else encounters it

It's worth noting that this particular scene now runs in Vantage quite happily, whereas I can't make gpu render it at all !, so whatever
you guys have done, Vantage has proved itself so much more than capable in my two largest scenarios to date....I am very happy indeed,
especially as I now have a use for the very expensive card I bought specifically for Vray gpu stuff

If Vantage is going above its memory budget, this can slow down other apps if Windows decides to evict them from GPU memory.
But what can happen exactly, I don't know, as it's something Windows does, it's a black box.

          Thanks for the explanation.
It didn't show any signs of wanting to freak out, so I'll take the risk....been trying for months to get the scene working so it's worth it
