  • Rendering Sequence in 3ds Max resets Environment Rotation in 1.6.2

Rendering Sequence in 3ds Max resets Environment Rotation in 1.6.2 and 1.6.1 using 3ds Max 2022. I'm trying it with the dialog in 3ds max and in Vantage with the same results. I've tried saving the Vantage scene file before trying to render and it makes no difference.

Side note: How can I change the Environment rotation in 3ds Max? I'm using an HDRI on a VRay Dome light. If I try to change the horizontal rotation on the vraybitmap I'm using on the dome, 3ds Max instantly crashes.

    Hi Scott,

Rendering Sequence in 3ds Max resets Environment Rotation
If you mean environment rotation that is set in Vantage than this is expected. Right after the "Start" button is clicked the scene is being send to Vantage from the specified first frame so that there is sync. Thus the scene is reset to that in Max, any change made in Vantage are lost.

You have 2 options that work:
    • the "Horiz. rotation" in the VRayBitmap which you already tried
    • use the "Lock texture to icon" option in the dome light and just rotate the dome gizmo
Regarding the crash I cannot seem to reproduce it. What version of V-Ray are you using, are in Live link while doing this, can you send a video of how the crash is happening?

    Best regards,

Thanks. I was using VRay 5 Update 2.1 and rotating the dome light gizmo wasn't working (it wouldn't update in Vantage 1.5.2 or 1.6.2). I've now updated to VRay 5 Update 2.2 with Vantage 1.6.2 and rotating the dome gizmo is working as expected. So consider my main point here solved.

I still get 3ds Max to instantly crash if I try typing in a number, or scrub, the "Horiz. rotation" of the HDRI Vray Bitmap used on the dome light. This happens with and without Vantage running. If Vantage is running and Max crashes, Vantage continues to run. Here is a screen shot. All I did was type 20 into that Horiz. rotation value, hit enter, and then this:
