  • Navigation Problems

    Hello Forum,

I'm new to vray for Rhino and just starting to explore Vantage. Upon loading a simple scene file into Vantage I'm finding the navigation behavior bizarre and unworkable. Can't find a way to zoom all after getting lost and losing the model somewhere. Also can't find a way to orbit the model. Using the navigation shortcuts is not working. The short cut menu has settings for specific apps but not for Rhino? If it matters I have a Logitech MX Anywhere 2 mouse which has never been a problem for any other app. Simple navigation can't be this crazy right? I must be doing something wrong. Hoping someone can help get me get on track.

    Thanks, Ed

    Hi Ed,

Which navigation preset are you using in Vantage? Can you record a video how you are trying to navigate?
The following abbreviations will be used:
    • LMB - Left Mouse Button
    • RMB - Right Mouse Button
    • MMB - Middle Mouse Button
    • [3] - 3ds Max preset
    • [S] - Sketchup preset
    • [M] - Maya preset
These are the default basic shortcuts for navigation depending on the preset:
    • Dolly Camera Sideways (Pan) - [3] MMB; [S] Shift+MMB; [M] Alt+MMB
    • Orbit Camera - [3] Alt+MMB; [S] MMB; [M] Alt+LMB
    • Zoom - [3] Ctrl+Alt+MMB; [S]no shortcut; [M] Alt+RMB
Pressing RMB will enable Free look mode with the following shortcuts:
    • W - Camera Move Forward
    • S - Camera Move Backward
    • A - Camera Move Left
    • D - Camera Move Right
    • Q - Camera Move Down
    • E - Camera Move Up
    • [SHIFT] + W/A/S/D/Q/E - Camera Move Faster
    Best regards,

      Hi Ed,

      Thanks for your report.
      In addition to Alexander's response.

Can't find a way to zoom all after getting lost and losing the model somewhere
You could select the model from the Objects tab on the left side (of Vantage's main window) and then use the Frame Selected/Scene option from the Veiw menu, which will frame the camera to the selection or the whole scene if noting is selected.

can't find a way to orbit the model
In the top toolbar we have an option, which allows you to control the orbiting navigation behavior:
Click image for larger version Name:	vantage_wkKHbENNiO.png Views:	0 Size:	7.2 KB ID:	1139104

If you choose Navigate around selection the orbiting will happen around the center of the selected object(s).

The default behavior is to orbit around the cursor ray hit, which means that a ray starting from the camera is "shot", through the pixel on which your cursor is, in the scene and the orbiting happens around the point where the ray hits an object, if the hit point is very far from the camera the orbiting could look "bizarre" and it's quite easy to "getting lost"

      not for Rhino
We'll research what could be done.

      Logitech MX Anywhere 2
The mouse shouldn't be a problem, but it could be quite "fast". The button next to the orbiting mode, in the top toolbar, decreases the navigation "speed" when toggled, give it a try. Also in Edit->Preferences...->Interaction we have a Mouse sensitivity option which allows you to fine tune the camera navigation speed, try with small value, maybe 0.1 or 0.2.

You could find additional information in our docs page: link1, link2
If after trying these options the problem is still present a short video(demonstrating it) could give us a better idea what's going on.

      Hope this helps.

      Cheers,
      Vladislav
