  • Crash on startup

Hi guys, I just tried the latest chaos vantage on my laptop but it just shows the intro and then it crashes right after loading the GUI.
Also I get this error in windows event viewer:

Faulting application name: vantage.exe, version: 0.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x61dc6b03
Faulting module name: ucrtbase.dll, version: 10.0.22000.1, time stamp: 0x00e78ce9

    Faulting package full name:
    Faulting package-relative application ID:

I tried everything from reinstalling all the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable packages as well as repairing the windows with sfc /scannow etc. but still does the same.
My laptop has a desktop CPU i9-9900K, an RTX 2080 8GB and 128GB of ram. O/S is windows 11 64bit.
Any suggestions on how to fix this problem?

Thanks for reporting this. Is there a file named Vantage_<some numbers>.dmp in your %TEMP% folder? If there is, please send it. If there isn't, we will have to find a way to reproduce this issue in order to fix it.

unfortunately, I don't see any Vantage_xxxxx.dmp file in my temp folder. Is there any log somewhere else to check?

We have a log file at %APPDATA%/Chaos Group/Vantage/debug_log.txt but the dump file is what would have given us the necessary details.

We have users on Windows 11 laptops that don't have an issue, so it must be something more specific. Are you using an external GPU?

No, I'm using just the internal GPU with the latest studio driver (511.65) but I tried also older drivers. Is there a way to enable the creation of the dump file ?

The dump file should always be created in the case of a crash if the app reached creation of the window, etc. So it is surprising that it's not getting created. But this handles crashes on the main app thread. Maybe it was some other thread that caused this and it's hard to guess which one...

The log file might give us a clue, actually.

I just found a "vantage.exe.21452.dmp" file under C:\Users\[User]\AppData\Local\CrashDumps. Is this the same?

It's not quite what we generate (the name), so I guess the OS created it, but I'd like to inspect it anyhow Were you using 1.6.2?

Yes I'm using the latest 1.6.2, I tried also older versions but still does the same on every version I tried so far.
I just uploaded both the log and the dmp here for you to inspect: https://drive.google.com/drive/folde...o8?usp=sharing

Great, thanks. The dmp file was definitely made by the OS since ours are no bigger than a few MB But anyway, I see what the issue is - even the log file hints at it. You have a very old version of Chaos Cosmos installed, a beta I believe. You have to uninstall it and reinstall Vantage and the issue should get resolved. If I remember correctly this old Cosmos requires some manual steps to be fully removed, listed here: https://forums.chaos.com/forum/cosmo...re#post1103839

I'm copying the text in case you can't access this beta forum:

Here's how to remove Cosmos beta browser and content:
                      1) Uninstall the existing Chaos Cosmos Browser program. On Windows, go to Add or Remove Programs, find Chaos Content Browser and click on Uninstall.
                      2) Remove any files from previous installations by deleting these directories (if they exist):
                      C:\Program Files\Chaos Group\Content
                      C:\Program Files\Common Files\ChaosGroup\Content
                      C:\Users\<YourUserName>\Documents\Chaos Cosmos

Finally, it's working! Thank you so much for your precious help! I uninstalled the chaos cosmos browser and deleted the folders as per your instructions, double-clicked the vantage icon and it launched without any error

You probably have to run the Vantage installer again though (or a recent V-Ray installer) to get Cosmos properly installed, so you could enjoy it in Vantage
