I was rendering all weekend and when I came to check my progress I saw this error message.

    Hi Luma3d.

This most likely means as in the error message that while rendering Vantage run out of GPU memory and couldn't proceed.

    Best regards,

I am getting this error as well. more often , and also vantage crashes more often after the update. I was working on the same files in the earlier version , without any issues.

Edit : Hiding or Unhiding objects in 3ds max Live-link makes vantage go out of memory resulting in crash.

Before 1.7.0 release normal maps were not supported and weren't loaded in memory. Now they are loaded in so the memory consumption is increased. So if before the support of normal maps the memory consumption was near the limit of the GPU VRAM (eg 7,8Gb used out of 8GB) now with the support it will exceed it and most likely crash.

Yes, I tried rendering normal maps, they are great, but they come at a cost and might even not work that well in low end RTXs. (I use RTX 3070)

Just an idea, but do you think we can have something like the Plug-in Manager in Maya? where we can disable the components we don't need? because In a certain project for example , we wont be using normal maps at at all, but we will still face the performance issue.

You can disable normal map application even now and this will speed up the rendering if it's using a lot of normal maps.
However, the normal maps won't be unloaded from GPU memory even when disabled.
We are working on a more general solution to this that will save memory in more cases.

Completely disabling normal map support might be possible and it will speed up the rendering even more than just disabling their application.
However, it will require restarting Vantage and waiting ~5 minutes for the new version of the Vantage shaders to compile.
