    A happy update!

By disabling SLI in the Nvidia control panel, it now seems to be working. I can also select 1 or 2 video cards in the Vantage (select render devices) tab. Not sure if select automatically or checking both video cards is better - but it works using either..

Before changing the SLI setting, I removed both graphics cards and did some testing on them individually to make sure they were good. Not sure if this helped any, but I do know if I enable the SLI setting it will give me the Direct 3D error.

Thanks so much for you help with this. Look forward to using Vantage again. Cheers!

      Are you using Windows 11?

Oh, never mind - there is a debug_log in an earlier post and it shows Windows 10. There is a driver bug with nvlink on Windows 11, but this is probably something else.

I wonder if there's a driver bug with nvlink in the latest windows 10 update? I didn't make any changes to my system except for the windows updates. All of a sudden I started getting the Direct 3D errors..

If this is the same bug we encountered earlier, our friends at nvidia said they are close to releasing a fix for it. Fingers crossed.

Hi Dave, I hope you're able to do your job with Vantage.
I have news directly from NVIDIA, they have a fix for the SLI issue, which is now being tested, the fix is a tricky one("in the deep parts of the driver") and they need to be sure that another applications are not affected negatively, as much as possible.
Currently the fix is scheduled to be released, with the corresponding driver, in the end of September.

              Cheers

The issue is supposedly fixed in driver 517.40 and newer. Please confirm

FYI I just encountered this same error for the first time yesterday. Had Max and Vantage open. Lots of Forestpack geometry and Railclone items.
Vantage has been rendering fine - I was batch rendering HQ cameras at 4032x1960, then going back to max and turning various layers on and off (Forestpack items), then re-rendering when it happened.
Locked me out of my system for a little while.
Wasn't even maxing out Vantage memory.

I think you mean the same dialog popped up, but this can happen for a number of reasons. The original poster's error was supposedly caused by an nvlink driver bug.

You probably ran out of GPU memory, this is what usually causes such crashes. The memory status indicator can update only after the allocation succeeds, so it might show a "low" value even if your memory is insufficient. Also, it only shows what Vantage uses and it sounds like Max could be using a significant amount in your scenario.

Do you have the "Safe GPU allocations" option turned on (it's the default)? Have you noticed how much of the CPU RAM is free? (significant amounts of CPU memory may be needed while uploading DirectX resources to the GPU - this could also cause a similar crash)

Will try to pay closer attention if it happens again.
                      Safe GPU Allocations is on.
                      .
Is there a way to split Max/ with one GPU and only use the other GPU for Vantage? I know how to select a specific GPU in Vantage (the card with more memory), but wondering if there's a way to allocate Max strictly to another GPU/card in this particular situation.

I recognize there's a VRay GPU Setup dialogue, but my impression is that this is only for rendering and would have no impact. Maybe I'm incorrect.

I don't know a way to control which GPU Max uses. I assume it uses the "main" GPU the display is plugged in to.

Hm, a colleague suggested trying this (well, maybe for 3dsmax.exe only, not global):

A bit of a pain only because this is only for this one job which is massive. But you're probably correct in that this might work.

Thanks. Will have to try this one out later. Might make life a lot easier moving forward.
