  • Scenen and assets transfer

Hi, can someone tell me precise method to send a vrscene complete with emedded textures, so that my colleague can open it in Vantage without any issues.
He does not have access to Max, so that's out of the equation.
In the docs it specifically says that it will pack everything to a zip, but it just does nothing...all I get is a vrscene file.
It's quite annoying. This should be simple but it is not.
    Cheers

    Hi fixeighted,

If the assets are shown as "found" in the Asset tracking, the .vrscene exporter from 3ds Max, should collect and optionally archive them with the vrscene. It might be an issue of the tool that is occurring in your case. What version of V-Ray are you using? Are there errors related to missing assets in the export window after export? The tool uses some functionality from the Chaos Cloud, you should see the tool pop for a moment in the task bar - does this happen as well?

Here's what it looks like in my case:

Name:	collect_assets_vrscene.jpg
Views:	375
Size:	49.8 KB
ID:	1160066

After the process has finished, I end up with a folder (or optionally a zip file) that contains the vrscene and the referenced files (textures, vrmeshes, etc).

    Best regards,
    Simeon

      Hi,

      Thanks for the reply.
After a week of trying to get this to work, for whatever reason (I suspect simply the fact that I posted this today), now it appears to work.
I notice that with a tiny test file of 116kb the resulting archive is 68mb, full of spi files, presumably tonemap stuff which is not used in the scene.
Are they necessary or is this unintented behaviour?

Before I tell my client that he can download yet another test file, can you say that this working method will result in him being able to simply open the scene in Vantage and have all textures automatically linked?
In the log it actually says...... 'vrscene" exported with 37 plugins'

I believe you have the VRayOCIO map is used in the scene, and it is probably set to use some of the OCIO configs. For instance the ACES config includes a lot of color transformations encoded in spi1d and spi3d LUTs. Technically, the LUT files are needed to render properly in V-Ray, so the vrscene exporter collects them. If you plan to render only in Vantage, you might want to remove those from the 3ds Max scene, since Vantage does not support OCIO.

If you used the "Archive as ZIP" option, the zipped vrscene will have its file paths relative to the included "resources" folder. With this in mind, sharing the zip seems like the option you need. Mind the vrscene exporter generates a vrscene, which has absolute file paths, outside the zip. You should not send this vrscene to the customer, since the resources will not be found. Long story short - use "Archive as ZIP", send the zip file and tell the client to unzip and open the containing vrscene.

I hope this helps. Let us know if there's any issue with this.

          Thanks for the clarification.

About those extra files; I don't have any ocio stuff in the scene but maybe the default starts with something added. It's a fresh clean scene with just a teapot and one texture...no added layers of anything, which is why it surprised me.
